Listen now | We have a difficult discussion in today’s podcast that relates to child safety and Abbey’s recent Substack article “We Must Be Critical of Non-Monogamy”. We unpack the reception and criticisms around the article, the importance of nuanced conversations around this topic, why no community is immune from having these discussions and so much more.
Dear Abbey and Liam, thankyou and well done on another great podcast. You are shedding light on an important topic and as with all the other topics, you've been brave to share your own experiences. Perhaps the intended message of highlighting those statistics (particularly in a NRE environment) was lost when people received your lived experiences and super-imposed them on their own experiences, which may result in some confronting differences. I'm sure the blanket rule you have is not meant as a personal attack on anyone, but when people imagine that situation in their own lives, it can be confronting. I think it's always beneficial to not be too set in any particular view, as new evidence comes to light, opinions can and sometimes should change. There is a great quote by Neil deGrasse Tyson about tattoos, that "there is nothing I am so sure about that I want to put it indelibly on my skin" - always be open to new ideas based on new evidence. As a Dad to 3 boys, I must admit I have a different opinion on the "blanket rule" you mentioned, but understand the decisions you've made, appreciate your openness and willingness to discuss these difficult topics.
