I love the analogy of opening up with renovating an existing house. Great post Abbey. In my case, completely unprepared, I blew up a few rooms all in one go, quite traumatically. Luckily our foundations were secure and we were able to rebuild trust and beautiful new relationships over time. And yes, there were kids involved and it probably wasn't ideal, but here we are ten years down the track, all okay.
